Consumer Alert: Fake "Ex-Military" Scams Exploiting Online Shoppers | When scrolling through social media, it is second nature to want to support a local service member or disabled veteran trying to make an honest living. Unfortunately, fraudulent operators are now exploiting that goodwill through deceptive online campaigns.
As reported by BBC News, investigators have exposed coordinated schemes where fraudulent operators use deceptive advertisements—sometimes leaning on artificial intelligence or fabricated personas—to pose as wounded or former service members selling "handmade" patriotic goods like wooden flags and crafts.
Unsuspecting consumers, eager to support veterans, purchase these items only to discover the products are mass-produced cheap imports shipped from overseas rather than custom-crafted pieces made by real veterans.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify the Maker: Look for verifiable local businesses, established artisans, or transparent non-profit veteran organizations before purchasing high-ticket handmade items online.
- Watch for Red Flags: Be cautious of social media ads featuring emotional appeals that direct you to unfamiliar e-commerce sites with limited contact information or vague return policies.
- Check the Source: Stick to trusted veteran-owned marketplaces and verified community vendors.

VA Taps Amwell to Revamp and Expand Telehealth Services | The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking a major step forward in modernizing its digital health infrastructure by signing a letter of intent to implement Amwell's telehealth platform.
The initiative is part of the agency's broader digital health modernization efforts. The partnership aims to streamline virtual care delivery, improve care coordination within VA facilities, and help veterans connect more seamlessly with VA primary care providers and medical specialists.
The upcoming revamp aims to improve access by helping beneficiaries connect with providers and specialists, bridging the gap for veterans who rely on virtual appointments or live in areas with limited access to in-person clinics. Additionally, it will support internal hospital workflows and virtual care coordination across VA medical centers. The finalization of a binding contract remains dependent on Amwell meeting federal requirements, including a thorough review by the VA’s chief information officer. | | | |
