Veterans Exhibit

November 9 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join Centerville Washington History and Washington Centerville Public Library for a very unique Veteran’s Day exhibit: Honoring our K-9 Heroes. Military working dogs, also known as war dogs or mercy dogs, have saved countless lives. Their keen intelligence, sense of smell, agility, size, speed, obedience, and especially loyalty make them ideal partners for soldiers serving on the front lines and beyond. More than just man’s best friend . . . they serve in positions of security, patrol, rescue, transport, and detection.

The exhibit will be open to the public from Friday, November 8 through Monday, November 11 at the Centerville Public Library on 111 Spring Valley Rd. The exhibit will close one hour prior to the library closing.

Additionally, there will be the following special events:

  • At 11 AM Saturday, November 9, a free showing of Megan Leavey at Town Hall. Megan was a Marine corporal in Iraq, who, with the aid of her combat dog Rex, saved many lives. This true story delves into the relationship between handler and animal as well as footage of the rigorous training the dogs endure.
  • At 3 PM Saturday, November 9, a guest speaker from the 88th military squadron at Wright Patterson Air Force Base will present a program at the Centerville Library about the use of dogs in the Air Force.
  • At 11 AM Monday, November 11, at Cornerstone, the City will host its annual Veteran’s Day ceremony.
  • At 1 PM Monday, November 11, Janet Carpenter from “Sophie’s Companions for Veterans” will speak at the Centerville Library about service animals for returning veterans. Truly, the work of a military dog is lifelong.
