Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame 2024 Class

Ohio Governor Mike Dewine and Ohio Department of Veterans Director Deborah Ashenhurst unveiled the 2024 Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame Class. Two Montgomery County residents, J.P. Nauseef and Anthony G. Massoud, were represented in the class.

Twenty outstanding inductees will be honored for their post-military accomplishments and achievements at the 33rd annual Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in November. This stellar class represents 14 Ohio counties and four branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Each class member meets the high standards of the Hall of Fame, which honors outstanding service and accomplishment following honorable service in the military. This amazing group has demonstrated a wide reach and has improved the lives of others through the avenues of healthcare, aerospace engineering, rehabilitation, public service, veteran advocacy, motivational speaking, volunteerism, philanthropy, and much more.

This year’s Induction Ceremony is set for Nov. 7, 2024, at 10 a.m., at the Fawcett Center (2400 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus, OH 43210) on the campus of The Ohio State University. The public is welcome to attend.

Veteran Spotlight: J.P. Nauseef

2024 Ohio Veteran Hall of Fame Inductee J.P. Nauseef has served as president and CEO of JobsOhio for over five years.

J.P. served as president and CEO of the Dayton Development Coalition (DDC), where he led community efforts to raise the profile of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during the 2005 base realignment and closure (BRAC) process. He was the chairman and co-founder of Military Heroes Foundation, an organization that provides support to veterans and military families, and he has also served as an advisor to defense-related businesses and community organizations

After graduating from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in management information systems, J.P. entered the Air Force as an officer. He served as a technology development program manager for early-era internet applications as well as for software development for a preoperational Global Positioning System.

J.P.'s father served as an Air Force Brigadier General and coming from a military inspired J.P. to serve.

"Coming from a military family, then serving myself, and then advocating for military families after my service—I learned that when the member serves—the spouse and the family serve."

J.P. also credits the Air Force for preparing him to succeed in civilian life at Krush Media and Moonshot services. Not only did the Air Force provide him with a "chance to serve with oustanding, world class people and learn from them," it also gave him the "opportunity to contribute to an important mission through the application of new technologies."

The Air Force provided J.P. with lifelong friends and mentors. He credits the community and values of the Dayton region as reasons he chose to raise a family here. Although not original from the area, J.P. and his wife Carmen chose to build a life in Ohio "because of the wonderful people, quality of life, education, and business opportunities."

VA Resumes Co-payments for Thousands of Veterans

Thousands of veterans, including those at The Chalmers P. Wylie Veterans Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, Ohio, will resume co-payments for medications starting in October. The co-payments were paused for several years due to complications with a new medical records system.

For now, veterans will not be charged for co-payments during the pause, but according to VA press secretary Terrance Hayes, VA is working with Congress and veteran service organizations on potential relief.

Because the payments were paused for so long, the debt could be very difficult for many veterans. We encourage you to write to your local representative in Congress to make them aware of this issue. If you know any veterans in the Columbus area, please contact them so they can be financially prepared for this change.

VA Costs Soar, Forcing Reevaluation of Programs

Last week Congress approved a $3B stopgap bill to help fund VA, which has run into a major budget shortfall.

The Christian Science Monitor investigated the budget issue and discovered that 30% of military veterans now receive disability payments, with 40% of post-9/11 veterans receiving disability payments.

Due to new legislation and diagnoses, VA has greatly increased the number of veterans eligible for benefits. For example, the PACT Act has provided benefits to veterans exposed by burn pits and VA has recognized more symptoms related to exposure to Agent Orange.

The Christian Science Monitor spoke to Professor Mark Duggan, who considered possible solutions to get ballooning costs under control. All proposed solutions required tough decisions, such as periodically reevaluating veteran disability status or reducing disability coverage.
