Veterans Connection: MCVSC Newsletter |
This is the last newsletter before Veterans Day so this issue is packed with the many veteran events for Nov 11 around the Dayton area. While there are far too many events to attend them all, we hope you all have a very special Veteran's Day that honors the sacrifices you have made to this country. As always, we thank you for your service.
Please continue to forward the newsletter and ask fellow veterans to subscribe. With over 36,000 veterans in the county, we’ve still got a long way to get them all subscribed, so please help by referring local veterans to https://mcvsc.org/subscribe. |

Veteran Spotlight: Richard Gard
Dayton's oldest surviving World War II veteran, Richard Gard, passed away on October 10, 2024. Gard was 101.
Gard was drafted in 1943 at the age of 18. During World War II he landed on Utah Beach in Normandy three days after D-Day.
Gard's time in Europe was marked by feats of heroism. He earned a Silver Star for actions during the Battle of the Bulge. Gard also earned two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. |
| | |
In 1945 Gard was injured in Belgium. The war ended before he could rejoin his division, but he continued to serve in the Army Reserves for two years. In 1950 he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. Gard rose to the rank of master sergeant.
Gard was born in Union City, Ohio but lived in West Carrollton since 1950. He attended the University of Dayton and worked for NCR and Cessna Aircraft.

Dayton VA Helps Combat Homelessness
In 2024 Dayton VA has helped 224 homeless veterans find permanent housing, already exceeding their goal of 194. Of those 224 veterans, only 8 returned to homelessness.
WDTN did a story on the progress, focusing on veteran James Lemaster. Once Lemaster connected with VA they helped him find housing and employment.
If you encounter any veterans facing the challenge of homelessness, please direct them to the Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission. Not only do we help these veterans obtain benefits from VA, we also provide direct support to veterans in need in our community. |
