To prepare for Memorial Day events, hundreds of Scouts spent Saturday decorating the graves of the thousands of veterans resting at Dayton National Cemetery. The annual event brings in Scouts from all around the region.
The American Legion participates, handing out pins to participating Scouts and providing volunteers to coordinate the event.
"Many graves have not been visited since last year," said Chaplin Clyde Hughes during last year's invocation. "May we honor them today with their own flag. Perhaps say their names and understand that by honoring them, we honor ourselves."
Over 57,000 veterans are interred at the cemetery located at the Dayton VA. The cemetery was originally created to bury those who passed at The National Asylum for Disabled Soldiers and Seamen, the precursor to the modern VA hospital. Many of the early veterans buried at the cemetery served during the Civil War.
