Wreaths Across America will be at Dayton National Cemetery on December 13th to place wreaths on headstones of the local historic resting place of tens of thousands of veterans. After the wreaths are placed a ceremony will be held to honor the heroes interred at the cemetery.

With over 55,000 headstones, the wreath laying ceremony could use your support, whether that be by financially sponsoring a wreath or by volunteering to lay the wreaths. So far, over 8,000 wreaths have been sponsored, which is less than 15% of the total. Wright State Named to "Best for Vets" List

As the Civil War neared its end in 1865, Congress passed legislation creating the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in March and Lincoln signed it. In April Lincoln was assassinated, making the legislation one of his final acts as president. Although the legislation was passed, it took over a year for the National Asylum to get up and running. In 1867 the first buildings went up on the Dayton campus.

The National Asylums immediately took on the new Thanksgiving tradition. The Dayton campus would coordinate with local farmers to provide massive Thanksgiving banquets for all the residents with turkey and fresh produce. During the first 40 years of the asylum, the number of residents in National Asylums grew from an initial 1,000 to over 21,000 in 1906. The cost and manpower continued to increase, but the National Asylums continued to deliver to ensure that those who sacrificed for our country could enjoy a festive holiday.
