Montgomery County is home to one of the oldest VA Medical Centers and neighbors one of the most important Air Force bases in the world. As such, we have a large veteran population. This makes the work of the Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission all the more important. Since Montgomery County is the fifth-most populous county in Ohio, a lot of veterans depend on us!
Below are some key statistics that highlight the importance of MCVSC in this veteran-rich county. Figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Population
- Montgomery County is home to 35,205 veterans
- 6.2% of people in Ohio are veterans, which is higher than the national average of 5.9%, but here in Montgomery County 6.6% of our population consists of veterans.
- That rises up to 7.7% when just considering individuals aged 18+.
Disability
- 28.3% of our veterans have some form of disability. This underscores the importance of our local VA Medical Center. This number is close to the national average.
- 19.0% of non-veterans have some form of disability. Service related disabilities largely account for the higher number of veteran disabilities.
Education
- 36.0% of Montgomery County veterans have obtained an associates degree or undertaken some college without obtaining a degree.
- This is higher than the 32.4% of non-veterans.
- 32.5% of our veterans have achieved a bachelor's degree or higher.
- Comparatively, only 31.9% of non-veterans have achieved a bachelor's degree or higher.
Employment
- 3.8% of Montgomery County veterans are unemployed.
- 5.4% of non-veterans are unemployed.
Takeaways
Veterans in Montgomery County outperform non-veterans when it comes to educational achievement and unemployment, but veterans are much more likely to face disability due to service-related injuries. This is especially true of veterans who served post-9/11. Nationally, 43.2% of veterans who served post-9/11 have some form of disability, which is much higher than previous generations.
The ability of our veterans to outperform non-veterans despite facing greater challenges is a testament to the skills, preparedness, and work ethic instilled in our men and women in uniform.
For veterans who face additional challenges, the Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission is always here to help. |
